My Spenceley Family Tree

My Great Great Great Grandfather , William Spenceley ,moved to Pickering with his brother Thomas in the early 1800's and carried on a business of Basket weaving.His son ,also William,didn't follow in this line but was recorded in the 1851 census as an agricultural labourer.He married at Pickering in 1856 , had two sons , William and Ralph , then moved to Middlesbrough sometime before the 1881 census when he is recorded living there next to his brother Robert.
Ralph married Emily Geldard in Middlesbrough , 1879 and lived in North Ormesby nearby .They had 10 children all born in N.Ormesby including my Grandfather George William Spenceley who was born in1894.George William married Eleanor Chillmaid in the local church of St John the Evangelist in 1922 . They had 11 children born in North Ormesby and in the newly built estate of Brambles farm on the expanding outskirts of Middlesbrough .When Ralph moved to N.Ormesby it must have been to be close to his work at the docks on the adjacent river , he is recorded in the Parish Registers as a Stevedore . This tradition stayed in the family for quite a while passing down to the sons of the family upto the son in law of my Uncle , Ronald Spenceley.

William Spenceley

.William married a Jane Todd on the 23rd May 1826 at the parish church of St Peter and Paul in Pickering. They had nine children and lived in Pickering where William is recorded in the baptismal records as a basket maker. In a trade directory of Pickering William is carrying on the trade of basket maker in Potters Hill which in the 1851 census is under the occupation of Thomas, his brother, and his family.

Westgate as it is today

In the 1851 census Jane is recorded living at 54 Westgate end in Pickering as a widow and pauper,William had died in 1846. Living with her was her mother, two sons, William and John and her daughter Elizabeth . The youngest daughter Ann is not recorded and has presumably died but I have to check this.Robert has gone , possibly to Middlesbrough (He was definatly there in 1871 and in 1881 He is living in the same street as William). Jane has presumably married, Martha is living at 2 Coal Depot where she is a house servant for the station master William Dixon , and Mary , who was only 11, was a house servant at 154 Beck hole for a William Atckinson .It seems that Jane was struggling to pay her way and the daughters where having to earn their own keep.The house they where living in is still there today and is a small two up two down type in a terrace on the main road from Helmsley.

William Spenceley b.1829

William was the first son of William and Jane. He was born in Pickering where he married Ellen Pilner on the 7th October 1856. William worked as a labourer in Pickering but in time went looking for work in the emerging Industry in Middlesbrough. He moved to Middlesbrough in the wake of his brothers Robert and John.

Ralph Spenceley b.1858

Ralph Spenceley was born 29th November 1858, the youngest of two brothers, to William and Ellen Spenceley. Ralph was born in the North Yorkshire town of Pickering and moved with his family to the growing industrial town of Middlesbrough.It was here that he met and married Emily Geldard in 1879. Ralph and Emily had 10 children all in the new town of North Ormesby that had been Laid out in the 1850's on the banks of the river Tees by the Pennyman family of Ormesby Hall.

Emily died in North Ormesby on the 6th September 1927, Ralph remarried at the age of 73 and died 6 years later on the 21st July 1937, He was at the time living in the newly built estate of Brambles Farm.

Albert Richardson Spenceley b.1882

Albert Richardson Spenceley was the first son of Ralph Spenceley.He was born in North Ormesby where he married Jane Phillips in the parish church St Hildas.they had eleven children but not all survived childhood.George, Doreen, Desmond and Norman all died before their third birthday.

He died in 1937 in the house where he had lived all his adult life and in the next street to where he was born.
