| Ormesby is said to have been named after a Saxon called Orme.
After the conquest the lands were given to Robert de Brus who granted
them to the Percys of Kildale. From the Percys it was passed by marriage
to the Conyers family ( John Conyers d.1438) and then to the Strangways
through the marriage of Ann Conyers to James Strangeways. The long association with the Pennyman family was started when in 1594 James Pennyman leased land and property from the crown and then in 1601 bought from the crown the area where the Manor of Ormesby stood. |

| The Pennymans built the Hall at Ormesby which was originally the Grange
and built a replacement farm near by. The Hall was added to and changed
various times through it's life, the major work being the addition of
what we now see as the Hall. Another lasting feature that the Pennymans gave us is the town of North Ormesby. North Ormesby was laid out after the success of the new town of Middlesbrough. North Ormesby is just to the east of Middlesbrough on land of the parish of Ormesby next to the river Tees, owned by the Pennymans. |
